Modern materials and technologies make it possible to make any room cozy and comfortable. And even if your bedroom is modest in size, believe me, you can make it stylish and functional. And even make out in any style you like.
Types of bedrooms
Content
Before choosing a design decision, it is necessary to take into account the layout of the room, its size and location.
Layout
In average panel houses, the bedroom area rarely exceeds 11 - 12 square meters. But limited options are not the worst. A much more serious problem is the shape of the room. Unfortunately, rooms of 3x4 m or so are quite rare, often the bedrooms in Khrushchev are “elongated” spaces in which it is difficult to arrange all the necessary furniture and other interior items.
In "long" rooms, furniture has to be placed along one wall so that there is a passage along the other. In this situation, some of the already small space simply disappears.
The size
If the room has an area of 12 square meters or more, the entire interior “set” is easily placed in it: a bed, a wardrobe, bedside tables and any decorative elements.
In a room with an area of not more than 10 square meters, you will have to sacrifice either one bedside table or a dressing table.
If your bedroom does not exceed 6 square meters in area, you will have to make every effort and imagination to place at least the necessary objects in the room.
And if the room is designed for two, then in addition to a double bed, it is possible to place only one thing: a table, a chest of drawers or a bedside table. So you have to “break” your head over the question: “What to sacrifice?”.
A little trick: in such limited spaces, the bed is usually placed near the window and the window sill or a small shelf above the bed successfully copes with the role of a bedside table.
Location
In a two- or three-room apartment, the bedroom is the easiest to organize. After all, this room will be used only for its intended purpose, which means that there is no need to zone and share the space. If the apartment has only one room, and from it you have to make a bedroom and a hall, then a headache for designers begins.
In such situations, they usually spend some redevelopment, turning a standard apartment into a studio without interior doors.As a result, it is possible to save some area due to the lack of walls and space for opening doors.
Important! Having decided to make a redevelopment, you should contact the appropriate authorities for permission so that subsequently you do not have to pay fines.
Another caveat: the studio is ideal for one person. If two or more people live in an apartment, this is not the most suitable solution to the housing problem. In addition, since the kitchen is combined with the rest of the apartment space, you have to put up with the smells of cooking and the noise of household appliances. But if this does not bother you, then the studio is definitely your option.
When redevelopment is not possible, and the room has to combine the living room and bedroom, you can use one of the following options:
- bookcase or bookcase;
- drywall partition;
- a screen or curtain;
- finishing materials, different in texture and color;
- make a podium for a berth, and inside organize a place to store different things.
If there is a loggia in the apartment, a sleeping place is organized there. For one person, the area is quite enough, and instead of a bedside table, a wide windowsill is used.
Choose a finishing material
In order for the design of the bedroom to be stylish and comfortable, it is not enough just to choose the right furniture, you need to take care of the proper decoration of the walls and floor.
Walls
When choosing material for the walls, it is recommended to proceed from the size of the bedroom. Almost any wallpaper is suitable for a large (12 sq.m.) room: plain and with a pattern, the main thing is that visually the picture does not reduce the size of the room. In other words, it is better to abandon:
- vertical stripes;
- large pattern;
- too motley colors.
Perhaps the best solution would be painting the walls. Firstly, it’s just made, secondly, for plain walls it’s easier to choose furniture and decorative elements, thirdly, it’s ideal for rooms with a niche or ledge - it’s much easier to paint over than to paste over.
The rooms of modest parameters perfectly "tolerate" the combined decoration. So, for example, one wall is painted with paint, and a wallpaper with a pattern is glued to the second.
It's no secret that it’s extremely difficult to arrange decorative elements in small rooms, there is a catastrophic lack of space. And the combination - a wonderful design find - will turn a tiny room into a stylish and comfortable place to relax.
Floor
Materials for finishing the floor are more than enough. Laminate and parquet, boards or linoleum, carpet or ceramic tile, the list can be continued for a long time. Porcelain tile, plank and parquet are recognized as leaders in environmental friendliness, therefore, if for you this is an important factor, or someone from your home may have a reaction to the composition of the materials, the choice is clear.
If the key is the indicator of the strength of the coating, then porcelain should be selected. It is no coincidence that this material is chosen for flooring in offices, where a huge number of people in street shoes go daily.
Those who can not imagine life without a carpet should take into account the fact that the material is not so easy to use, needs care and quickly loses its original appearance.
Linoleum is the leader in popularity, and this is understandable. Modern options are very different from those that took place in the apartments of our grandmothers.
Ceiling
Why does the ceiling deserve the same attention when designing a bedroom in Khrushchev, like walls or floors? Because the competent design of the ceiling will visually make the room larger. And thoughtless use of what is at hand can hopelessly spoil the entire interior.
So, for the walls there is also a sufficient range of finishing materials, in particular:
- decorative plaster;
- paint;
- drywall;
- ceiling tile;
- stretch ceiling.
For a bedroom of modest size, the ideal solution would be painting or applying decorative plaster. Modern options, such as suspended ceilings or suspended structures, ruthlessly "steal" the space and this is noticeable even with the naked eye. And since in principle the presence of high ceilings is not provided for in Khrushchev’s, we leave all the know-how outside our modest square meters. Also, do not implement ideas with stucco or plaster decorations - this is not the case when elements of luxurious baroque or rococo should "settle down" in the apartment.
Lighting
Let there be light! Lighting in the bedroom is one of the most important tasks requiring careful consideration. On the one hand, this is a relaxation room and nothing should distract from sleep, and on the other hand, a dressing table is located in the bedroom and sometimes a workplace is equipped here for which good lighting is needed. All of the above arguments clearly show that one chandelier in the center of the ceiling space is indispensable.
Or, if the room is divided into two residential areas, one will be left without a window - a source of natural light. Designers recommend thinking about using a sconce or other wall lights that work from a wall outlet. Typically, such devices have a power of up to 40 watts, and their light is enough.
Do not choose massive floor lamps and chandeliers decorated with volumetric elements for a small room. If you really want to leave the chandelier, then let it be located under the very ceiling, and hang a wall lamp at the head of the bed.
Do not forget that the light from the bulbs may be cold, but may be warm. For a bedroom, warm light sources are more suitable.
Furniture and decorative items
Before you realize your cherished dreams of luxurious furniture, think about what and where you will arrange in your modest square meters, and what style the future environment should correspond to. And only then buy beds, bedside tables and wardrobes.
Furniture
The standard furnishings of the bedroom include a bed, bedside tables and a wardrobe. In a 3x4 room, you can easily place all the necessary interior elements. The bed is located across the room, and the rest of the furniture around it.
The wardrobe is another not simple “participant” of the interior. As a rule, they put him outside the door so that he does not catch his eye at the entrance.
If the size and shape of the room does not allow you to place a cabinet, open storage systems will come to the rescue. These are modular constructions of modest sizes, which in their bowels easily accommodate all the essentials and even a little more. Someone prefers to cover them with curtains, and someone sees a special style in the open placement of household items.
Decor
Since the area is small, the decor should be appropriate, moderately bright and small in size. The classic idea for accents in the interior is bright textiles and posters on the wall. Also, as an original addition to the general interior, unusual lamps are used, floor vases of an interesting shape, pots for indoor flowers with a pattern that is characteristic of the interior style.
Space Management Tips
- For more storage space, hang shelves and place cardboard boxes on them. This will help to create additional places for placement and make the interior interesting.
- If the bedroom has a working area, discard the table in standard sizes. Get a narrow desk and place it by the window.
- To save space, use all the space from the ceiling to the floor, and instead of swinging cabinet doors, use sliding doors.
- Much depends on the light sources, make sure that the room has several local lights that illuminate a specific area.
A modest square meter of Khrushchev is not yet a sentence for eternal stay in an old-fashioned and uncomfortable home. Believe me, in the end, it all depends on you. Even a small room can be made convenient, and an irregularly shaped room will be able to accommodate all the necessary interior items and will become a stylish gem of an apartment.
